What Are the Changes in The New BS VI Engine?

Coming into effect on April 1, 2020, the Bharat Stage VI norms in India stand as the latest emission norms issued by the Government to control the levels of pollution from vehicles. These come only years after the BS IV norms, which came into effect in 13 countries in the year 2010.

The new BS VI engine comes as a significant improvement over its predecessor, the BS IV engine. Here are some of the major changes in the engines. 

  1. Reduced emissions

The Bharat Stage VI engine has significantly cut down on the levels of emissions. This includes reducing some of the major pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM), and hydrocarbons (HC) as compared to the BS-IV engine. The engines are integrated with advanced exhaust after-treatment systems such as selective catalytic reduction (SCR), diesel particulate filter (DPF), as well as lean NOx trap (LNT).


  1. Improved fuel efficiency

Increased fuel efficiency is the most notable improvement in the new BS VI engine. With a higher compression ratio, improved combustion chamber design, and better fuel injection systems, the new engines are crafted to maximise fuel efficiency and save fuel costs.


  1. Enhanced performance

The BS VI engine does not fall behind in terms of performance. These engines are equipped with advanced engine management systems, turbocharging, and other technologies to power the efficiency levels while using the minimum amounts of fuel. The engines are better performance and responsiveness than the BS IV engine. 


  1. New materials and components

The BS VI engine uses new materials and components such as lightweight alloys, advanced ceramics, and high-tech polymers to improve durability and reduce weight.


  1. Higher cost

Since the BS 6 engines are more complex to manufacture than the BS-IV counterparts due to the use of advanced technologies and materials, they are naturally more expensive. Consequently, this cost is passed on to the consumers in the form of higher prices for vehicles which are equipped with these latest engine versions. 


Conclusion

With the idea to combat the increasing pollution levels, the BS VI engine is a significant improvement over the BS IV engine in terms of emissions, fuel efficiency, and performance. To get the most value and performance from these engines, it is important to use BS VI-grade fuel.
